Top 5 Brick Paver Styles
Bricks are one of the most commonly used building materials in the world. In the US, brick was once the default material used for pavement. As technology has evolved, so has the use of brick. Currently it is more widely used as a decorative surface rather than a roadway finish material. Bricks are typically laid flat and, in some cases, interlock giving them strength that is beneficial for many construction purposes. At PMS Diversified Construction Services, we have a bit of a thing for bricks, and we’d like to share our knowledge with you.
There are many uses for brick when it comes to home construction projects. We’ve created a brief outline below to give you an understanding of the different type of bricks commonly used and what each type is best suited for.
1. Common Burnt Clay Bricks
Common burnt clay bricks are the reddish bricks most people are familiar with. They are formed through the use of pressing in molds, and once that is done they are dried and fired in a kiln. Common burnt clay bricks are a utility player of sorts, i.e. they are very multipurpose. When these bricks are used in walls or something with an exposed surface, they generally require plastering or rendering.
2. Sand-Lime Bricks
Sand-lime brick is a product that uses lime as opposed to cement. It is usually a whitish brick made of lime and selected sands, and like the burnt clay, it is made in a mold and cured before it is finished. This style of brick is versatile as well, but looks good in a garden or natural setting due to its neutral color.
3. Fly Ash Clay Bricks
As the name implies, fly ash clay bricks are manufactured with a mixture of clay and fly ash, at a very high temperature. One of the key benefits of a fly ash clay brick is that their production saves energy, reduces mercury pollution, and costs on average 15% less than regular brick.
4. Concrete Bricks
Concrete brick are oblong chucks of concrete finished in a mold. Concrete bricks are usually used in facades, retaining walls, and provide an excellent clean visual appeal. In the manufacturing process the coloring of the brick can be altered to meet any (within reason) customization need.
5. Engineering Bricks
Engineering bricks are bricks that are cooked at very high temperatures, forming a dense and extremely strong brick. This style of manufacturing allows the brick to have increased durability and have a higher degree of water resistance. Engineering bricks are often used for commercial projects.
