When it comes to things like driveways and garden pathways, people generally turn to one of two things, depending on their personal taste and budget. They will generally either make use of brick paving or gravel as a surface for their paths and driveways. Gravel is quite popular as you see it so many places, but brick paving should not be overlooked, and offers many benefits as well.
At PMS Diversified Construction, we work on brick paver projects on a daily basis and are intimately familiar with certain material advantages. Brick pavers are an excellent option to consider because they are long lasting, durable in nature, and offer a wide variety of color and design possibilities. This is especially true if you are looking for an alternative to conventional concrete or gravel. Want to know more? Read on.
Brick Pavers are Long Lasting
The reason brick paved driveways last a long time is that each individual brick used is constructed to be very strong. And if installed properly, bricks are interlocked in a way that creates a rock solid entity. With this interlocked structure, the weight from vehicles is easily distributed between the surface of the brick and adjacent bricks, plus the sand level below. The more bricks there are, generally the stronger and more durable a surface will become.
Brick Pavers are Not Prone to Water Damage
Given that the bricks are laid upon either a sand or gravel base, this allows for water to percolate between each brick and be easily absorbed into the substrate below. This eliminates any water buildup that could lead to damage on a concrete surface or potential washout of a fully gravel surface.
Brick Pavers are Flexible
Brick pavers maintain their interlocking form better than concrete because when the earth shifts below, clay pavers adjust themselves. This accommodates the movement of the underlying soil and thus prevents the cracking so commonly seen in concrete. This also applies to topical pressure of a vehicle or a person’s foot as well, but to a lesser degree.
Brick Pavers are Low Maintenance
Once laid, brick pavers require little maintenance and upkeep. Keeping the driveway or path free of debris or moss is always a good idea. This can be achieved with simple periodic sweeping or power washing. Overall, the upkeep on a brick laid driveway or pathway is minimal, and can be expected to last for generations to come. Take the brick streets of Boston for example, 200 years on and they’re still going strong.
We hope the points above have given you a clearer idea of the benefits in using brick pavers for your next driveway or pathway project.
